World Ocean Day is celebrated across the world on June 8. The day is all about raising global awareness about the challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans. According to UNESCO, the concept of a World Oceans’ Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a way to celebrate our world’s shared oceans and our connection to the marine waters, as well as to raise awareness about the crucial role the oceans play in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it.
To make our students environmentally conscious, the World Ocean Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and vigour. A presentation about the same was given by Ms Rashmi Kulkarni. The students also participated in the programme by making paintings and posters about World Ocean Day and about how to protect and conserve our oceans and marine life.
Oceans are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe, as well as a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere.
